Featured Chapter: AVID Orange County Dollars for Scholars
California Dollars for Scholars is pleased to announce the newest California chapter, AVID Orange County Dollars for Scholars.
The AVID Program in Orange County was initially implemented in 1992 in one high school. AVID has since expanded to 112 middle and high schools from 18 districts. Currently AVID serves over 10,000 students in Orange County. Of the 823 seniors that graduated in 2007, 79% applied to 4-year universities, with 67% being accepted.
AVID is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students, and most especially the least served students in the middle capable of completing a college path:
-
will succeed in a rigorous curriculum,
-
will enter mainstream activities of the school,
-
will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and
-
will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.
AVID is offered as an elective course that, like any other class, meets regularly. Each week, students receive two hours of instruction, two hours in tutor led study groups, and one hour in motivational activities and academic survival skills, including critical reading and writing skills. AVID students are encouraged to take prep courses (in middle school) and move into honors/advanced placement courses and/or International Baccalaureate.
Welcome Orange County AVID! This program is part of California’s AVID Region 9, which includes AVID San Diego County, already established as a Dollars for Scholars chapter. RIMS-AVID, California Region 10, is also a Dollars for Scholars chapter, and includes AVID students in Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino chapters.

Featured Chapter: Laguna Beach HS Dollars for Scholars

The Artists’ Theatre in Laguna Beach was the site for the 2009 Honors Convocation recognizing 100 graduating Laguna Beach High School seniors who were awarded scholarships by the Laguna Beach High School Scholarship Foundation chapter of Dollars for Scholars. Nearly $230,000 was awarded students at the event. Former scholarship winners were also on hand.
James Hanna, a 1998 graduate, took his scholarship money to Duke University and then the London School of Economics. Now he plans to open his own investment firm in Laguna Beach. Noah Plomgren, a 2008 graduate and a student at Carnegie Mellon University, summed up the feeling of all the winners: I walked out of the honors convocation with quite a sum of money and I realized what a remarkable community I grew up in,” he said. “You believed in me and helped me believe in myself.” Marge Earl, president of the Laguna Beach Dollars for Scholars chapter, added, “The generosity of this town continues to amaze me and make me very proud.” Congratulations to all!
